An electrifying start helped Julie McCarthy to a three-under 68 on the opening day of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in California.

The Forrest Little golfer is just one shot adrift of Wake Forest’s Rachel Kuehn who fired an excellent round of 68 to lead on four-under.

Three birdies in her opening three holes proved the catalyst for McCarthy in a round that included six birdies.

A dropped shot on the 6th saw the Auburn student turn in 33 before two birdies in three holes to start her back nine gave her some momentum again.

A bogey on 15 was followed by a birdie on 17 but she dropped one on 18 to fall out of a share of the lead.

McCarthy’s Auburn teammate Anna Foster is in a share of 24th place on two-over while Wake Forest star Lauren Walsh struggled to a three-over 74 after three bogeys in four holes on her front nine.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Sara Byrne in the Valspar Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills.

Byrne slumped to a final round 79 to fall to eight-over-par and a share of 25th place.

The University of Miami student teed off just two shots shy of the overnight lead but a disastrous start put paid to her chances of winning.

Byrne dropped four shots in her opening three holes going bogey, double, bogey before carding her only birdie of the day on the par-3 4th.

Bogeys on five and seven saw her turn in 41. A steadier back nine followed but there were dropped shots on 12 and 16.

In the end it was a seven-over round for an eight-over total.
